This is the name for one of the ways a woman can be sterilized. As such it should be thought of as permanent. Which will mean that you have, hopefully, thought long and carefully about whether a permanent solution to contraception is what you need and want. If you have all of the children that you want, and you and your partner have decided that it is time to look at sterilization, then this is clearly a method to look at in more detail.
Very often it is the woman who looks after the contraception for herself and her partner. As such, there are very many non permanent paths to take. So lets take a look at just a few of the different types you can use before you decide on a more permanent method. There are of course condoms and the daily pill, but as you are looking for a more permanent method then perhaps you would like to think about the contraceptive implant. This is a small flexible tube that contains progestogen which is the synthetic progesterone hormone. This will be inserted under the skin of your upper arm by a health professional, and it will last for three years. This can very easily be reversed so that you will be fertile again. Also there is the contraceptive injection, this can last, depending on which one you choose, either twelve or eight weeks. This also contains progestogen but as with all contraceptives that contain artificial hormones, there are some side effects. There are also Intra Uterine Devices or the Intra Uterine System. These are small devices that are placed in the woman’s uterus by a trained professional that can last from three months to ten years. This is another way of taking care of your contraceptive needs for longer that will be quickly and easily reversed.
If you have had problems, side effects with such things as hormonal birth control then you will need to look at a more permanent method. So let us look at what Bilateral Tubal Ligation actually is. So first let us look at a little science. Coming into the womb we have two openings, and these are the start of the fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes then go up to the ovaries which is where the eggs are released during ovulation. Sperm will wend its way up from the vagina, through the uterus then it will continue on up to the fallopian tubes where it will meet with the egg which is traveling down the fallopian tubes to meet up with it. This is how the fertilization of the egg happens.
A bilateral tubal ligation is the surgical way to disrupt this meeting of sperm and egg. The disruption is caused by either burning a mid section of the tube on both sides, securing a clip or a suture on either side of the tube or by tying knots in both tubes and cutting in between the knots on either side. By causing the egg and sperm to never meet in such a way fertilization is stopped and the egg will be absorbed back into the body each month. This procedure can be done either by keyhole surgery, lessening scar tissue or if you tell the doctors before the birth of your last child, it can be done during a cesarean section if that is how the baby needs to be born.
As this is a permanent sterilization, yes it can be reversed but only through you having to get back on the operating table, you do need to consider this procedure deeply before doing it.
